OAK CREEK OLYMPIAN SOCIETY

Oak Creek Olympian Society was organized Nov. 19, 1898, sixty-three years ago.

The first recorded membership is as follows: John Swenson - Jacob Paulsen - Peter Paulsen - Alfred Paulsen - Bertha Paulsen - Emma Paulsen - Roy Scott - Claude Hansen - Percy Shivers - Shirley Shivers - Charley Nelson - Albert Sandine - Jettie Rambo - Hans Madison - Markle French - Boline Hanson - Anton Hanson and Enoch Larson.

The instigators of this society were young folks who evidently read history, as they derived the name from the ancient city of Olympia of Elis, Greece.  Olympia was the great political and religious center of the then cultivated world.  The constitution and by-laws of the Olympian Society reflect what the ancient city of Olympia was renowned for.

Other numerous timely questions of that time were debated.  The members overlooked no opportunity in securing information as noted in the record.

The society secured M. Nels Nelson Sergeant in the 20th Kansas Regiment to give a lecture on the Phillipine Islands and to display numerous weapons and utensils used by the natives in war and civil life.

The usual programs were order of business, recitations, songs, plays, debates and drill in the use of Roberts rules of Order.

I noted where the Socety had a box social for the purpose of purchasing an organ for the school.  It was quite significant that the Society was quite civilized as they had to have a marshall.  Probably it was necessary as it was noted the membership included young and old form the whole countryside.
