NORWAY SIXTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

P. J. Paulsen, now living in San Diego, California, had a meat market in Norway sixty-five years ago.  Of Frank Dickerhoof's store he says. "The plug chewing tobacco was J. T., Star, Horse Shoe, and some other brands.  Smoking tobacco was Prince Albert, Bull Durham, and some cigars.  Cheese on the counter in big round cakes and the cat slept near by.  Sugar, loaf, brown and granulated, came in barrel containers, and prunes and dried applies also in bulk in barrel containers.  Gingham and calico in large bolts and loafers used to grace the counters and had to be pushed off in order to measure out dry goods."

"As I recall those days the Dickerhoof store, Joe Lehn's Blacksmith Shop and the Nelse Nelson Barber Shop were on the west side of the street and my Butcher Shop and the Wm. Beatty Store and Post Office were on the east side.  John Summer was the livestock buyer and Harry Dickerhoof the grain  buyer.  I boarded with the Dickerhoofs and Charley Belden, Harry Dickerhoof, Sam Summer, part of the time, and I roomed over the Dickerhoof store.  I knew everyone in Norway Township and they all knew me.

Ice was cut on the river in winter and packed in straw or saw dust for use in the summer!"
