THE NORWAY VIKINGS 4H CLUB

By Mrs. Russell Fraser

The Norway Vikings 4H Club was one of the first clubs organized in the Republic County (about 1932).  Later this club disbanded and for several years this part of the county was without a 4H club.

On March 30, 1954 Garnett Zimmerly met with interested 4H people and organized the second Norway Vikings 4H Club.

The officers elected were President Marjean Benson; Vice Pres. Shirley Guiot; Sec.-Treas. Janet Fraser; Reporter Robert Carlgren; Song Leader Norman Brewer and Community Leaders Mrs. Chas. Carlgren and Galen Morley.  Other charter members were Elaine Carlgren, Jody Graham, Mike and Miriam Moore.  Kathleen and Patty Tate joined at the May meeting to bring the membership to 11.

Each member enrolls in at least one project and promises to complete all requirements.  This includes keeping records of costs and returns and the methods used.  The work is done under supervision of the parents with guidance from project leaders- if leaders are available.  Shirley Guiot and Janet Fraser remained members until they left home to go away to school.

During these seven years each club member has done a very fine job of winning awards and bringing home blue ribbons.  Of course, it isn't ribbons won that spell success, but the good these young people gain from completing projects and working together and trying to remember, "Today's youth are tomorrow's leaders."

During the year new projects have been added and this year the members have been enrolled in the following projects: clothing - food preparation - food preservation - sheep - beef - dairy cows - rabbits - home garden - Irish potatoes - sweet potatoes - grain sorghum - forage sorghum - corn - and home grounds beautification.
